Pemmican is usually bland. Growing up, I ate pemmican quite a bit in the summers. Some of it was smoke dried, some had sage flavoring later in the summer. If made in saskatoon season, that was the flavor. Winter made pemmican was smoke dried. The purpose is food, energy, not a tasty sensational enjoyment of eating. It is the lowest form of "eat to live and do work". The low appeal is also good for dieting, and reduces the urge to overeat.

After a time on pemmican only, it may taste better than lean meat, say spring rabbits.

I have not eaten either for forty years now, but what do I know.
