Holy Shit!

Excuse my language but in this case, it is appropriate.  I almost said Holy Cow but after I read this article Holy Shit seemed much more fitting.  What Taco Hell puts in the crap they sell is not allowed to be called beef.  Here are some of the ingredients they sneak into their "meat":

Water, isolated oat product, salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, oats (wheat), soy lecithin, sugar, spices, maltodextrin , soybean oil (anti-dusting agent), garlic powder, autolyzed yeast extract, citric acid, caramel color, cocoa powder, silicon dioxide (anti-caking agent), natural flavors, yeast, modified corn starch, natural smoke flavor, salt, sodium phosphate, less than 2% of beef broth, potassium phosphate, and potassium lactate.

Just another place to cross off your list if you haven't already.  If you become really aware of what you eat and how foods effect you, you will end up only eating home cooked meals and at few high quality restaurants.  People who take pride in what they cook do not compromise on ingredients to save a few cents per serving.

I do believe I'll forward this a co-worker who eat Taco Bell nearly every day for lunch (and chocolate chip cookies for breakfast).

I saw your post linked to the Fight Back Fridays blog carnival and I just had to check it out(cause I found the title so intriguing). Now that I have read the ingredients list I think I'm going to be sick to my stomach.....GROSS!

Chris:
I am sorry if you were grossed out. Had you eaten Taco Hell recently?

I saw that lawsuit and was originally grossed out too. (actually, I don't eat fast food any way but...)
Taco Bell have fought back, and say this is a bogus law suit.
"Our recipe for seasoned beef includes ingredients you'd find in your home or in the supermarket aisle today:

88% USDA-inspected quality beef
3-5% water for moisture
3-5% spices (including salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, sugar, garlic powder, cocoa powder and a proprietary blend of Mexican spices and natural flavors).
3-5% oats, starch, sugar, yeast, citric acid, and other ingredients that contribute to the quality of our product.
"Our seasoned beef contains no "extenders" to add volume, as some might use. For more information about our ingredients go to http://www.tacobell.com

Here's the link about the lawsuit.

I looks like what Taco Bell is saying is in their recipe is true, and the law suit is trumped up. It scared me because a friend of mine read the original claim and said, "so, it's just fillers."

It also bothers me because they used to say that their Taco meat was gluten free. I don't know if they still do, but with those ingredients. They aren't.

I'd still never eat it. : )

In Taco Bell's defense, they START with 100% ground beef, just like anyone else who is making a ground beef filling for tacos and burritos. Most of what they add to it is seasonings, starches for thickening, and preservatives. After all, you wouldn't want to eat a spice blend with oil in it (which keeps the product from creating too much dust) in which the oil has gone rancid. Most of this stuff is in our kitchen cabinets and all of it is in our local grocery stores. Personally I don't think ground beef has a lot of flavor served "as is" and I'm glad that Taco Bell adds flavor to it. I know that when I cook ground beef, I add flavor too.

I almost always season my ground beef and by weight after seasoning, I guarantee it is still 99% beef.
